History of CopyTec
The story behind the paper & print.
Way before CopyTec was established, this was the place known for the lumber mill and coal in the early settlement of Pleasant Grove. Logs were brought down from the mountains and made into lumber for the community, much of what was used to build homes and businesses back then. Through the years it has been known as Thornton’s Lumberyard and Pleasant Grove Lumber. When the Ray Dean Gurr family took over it was known as DT&J Stakes and then Gurr’s Mill and Supply. At that time it went from a full blown lumberyard to manufacturing survey stakes for road construction and surveyors.
The present owners, Kevin and LaNona Gurr took over twenty five years ago; changed the name to CopyTec added a few more buildings and began printing blue prints for engineers which quickly developed into a full service print business. In 2016 they added another partner, their son Cameron. From its early origins we still deal with wood, but in a different form called “paper”. In keeping with tradition this land is still used to preserve families, make memories and build businesses.
Kevin grew up in Pleasant Grove. He worked in the lumberyard as a teenager for his Uncle Wilford. When his uncle moved to Florida, his dad took over and started to manufacture survey stakes. Kevin was on his mission at that time, he came home to a survey stake business. He opened a craft store where the copy machines are now. It was called Family Home Idea Center. During his schooling (At Utah State-he’s an Aggie!), he worked with his Dad making stakes, when he came back; he managed this business for him. After they sold the business, he took a job teaching school at Lehi Jr High. He then went to Mountain View High School and presently teaches at Orem High School. He teaches: drafting, engineering, wood shop and robotics. He is retiring from Alpine School District and going to live his dream….to actually work at CopyTec!
LaNona grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She went to school at Ricks College and then at BYU. Her major was Early Childhood Education and Family Life. She began her teaching career at Central Elementary School here in Pleasant Grove. She taught 2 nd grade for a few years and there she met Kevin. They have a family of 7 children. They have all worked here at CopyTec. While Kevin taught school, she ran the business. In her spare time she likes to garden, read and spend time with her family.
Cameron was one of those 7 children that decided to stick around. He was born in Logan, but grew up in Pleasant Grove. He went to Pleasant Grove High School. He ran track, served a mission to the Philippines, and attended BYUI where he met his wife Danielle. He lives here in Pleasant Grove with his five wonderful children. He is a great asset to the business as he has made some has helped make some wonderful changes and has many more ideas for the future.
